Study of St Cecilia Teaching St Frideswide1859 Accession number: 1927P536 Pen and ink and brown wash on blue paper. Width: 199 mm Height: 181 mm InformationThis is a study for 'The Education of St Frideswide', the uppermost panel of the left-hand light in the St Frideswide Window of the Latin Chapel, Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. The window was executed in 1859 by James Powell & Sons, and represents the life of the saint, who is the patroness of the City of Oxford. The window consists of 16 compartments spread across four lights. Originally Swinburne was to have written verses to accompany each section, although even without these, there was difficulty in fitting all the scene into the available space as Burne-Jones had been given the wrong measurements. A study for the whole window is in Aberdeen Art Gallery.
