Dalziels' Bible Gallery - Jacob hears the Voice of the Lord1865 – 1881 Accession number: 1920P713.1.26 Wood engraving on India paper, in bound volume. Width: 147 mm Height: 188 mm InformationThis scene from the Old Testament (Genesis, 46, 2) illustrates the moment when Jacob first hears the voice of th Lord. Sandys symbolises the power of God's voice by depicting it as a thunderbolt and a cloud emanating a blindingly strong light. Sandys produced few biblical compositions but in 1861 he was commissioned to design a series of illustrations depicting scenes from the life of Joseph. According to letters from the artist to the engravers he was enthusiastic about the project. However, it never came to fruition. This wood engraving may have been a design orginally intended for the life of Joseph (Betty Elzea, 'Frederick Sandys 1828-1904: a Catalogue RaisonnĂ©, pp. 224-5). Ultimately, it was engraved by the Dalziels and published in their Bible Gallery in 1881.
