The Passing of Venus - Study of a seated Woman1877 Accession number: 1911P64 Pencil touched with white on green paper. Width: 232 mm Height: 153 mm InformationThis is a study for the unfinished bodycolour painting in the Tate Collection. The subject shows Venus riding a chariot drawn by doves, watched by young maidens in the foreground (of which this study is one), who open up their heart to her as she passes them. Conceived as a design for a tile panel in 1861, the scene became a fan design and a tapestry woven by Morris & Co in 1898, and again in 1922-26.
