Information

This is a drapery study for the mother in 'The Sailor's Bride,' a wood engraving executed by Joseph Swain, after a design by Sandys, and published in 'Once a Week,' (13 April, 1861, vol. 4, p. 434). The illustration accompanied a poem of the same name by Marian E. James which 'concerns the return home of an about-to-be-married sailor who finds that his bride-to-be has just died' . dated to 1 December 1860 (Betty Elzea, 'Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné,' p. 200).
