The Spirit of Justice - Drapery Study for Erudition / Drapery Study and outline Sketch of two Legs1844 – 1845 Accession number: 1906P753 Black chalk on laid paper. Width: 199 mm Height: 200 mm InformationThis is a study for the bearded figure of Erudition in Brown's cartoon 'The Spirit of Justice.' He submitted the cartoon to the 1845 fresco competition to decoprate the newly rebuilt Houses of Parliaiment but was unsuccessful in winning a commission. It is not clear to which work the drapery study and the sketch of two legs on the reverse relate. No figures matching them appear in the cartoon or in 'The Ascension,' an oil sketch Brown was also working on in 1844.LM
