Chaucer at the Court of Edward III - Study of right Leg and left Foot for Milton1847 Accession number: 1906P711 Black chalk on paper, laid down. Width: 125 mm Height: 294 mm InformationThis is one of two studies in Birmingham's collection for the legs of the poets in Ford Madox Brown's abandoned triptych 'The Seeds and Fruits of English Poetry' begun in 1845. From the pose it is most likely to be for the legs of the poet Milton as he appears in the right wing of the oil study now in the Ashmolean Museum. The wings were later discarded and the central panel became 'Chaucer at the Court of Edward III' (1851, oil on canvas, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney).LM
