Information
This detailed drawing of an elderly man is a study for Ford Madox Brown's painting 'Wycliffe Reading his Translation of the Bible to John of Gaunt, in the Presence of Chaucer and Gower.' The study is for the main character, Wycliffe, and according to Brown's diary the model was a professional called 'Old Coulton' (Virginia Surtees, ed., 'The Diary of Ford Madox Brown,' pp. 25 & 39). A photograph of the drawing published in 1896 shows it with the date of 1847 inscribed after Brown's signature. This has since been cut off.LM
