Information
Apparently a detailed preparatory study for the large oil painting dated 1858 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1859 (now in the Tate Gallery, London). Millais had conceived the subject some years earlier, making specific reference to the Scottish superstition that a coffin-shaped cloud at sunset presages death.
