The King at the Gate - Head and upper Body of muscular Man, detached upper Part of Leg from the same figure, and half-figure of female Piper1858 Accession number: 1906P1066 Black chalk with brush and black ink on tracing paper. Width: 78 mm Height: 156 mm InformationBetty Elzea suggests that the muscular man may have been copied from a work by Blake and the classical, female piper may have been borrowed from Flaxman. She links these two figures to Sandys' illustration 'The King at the Gate' (pub. in 'Once a Week,' March 1862) noting that he used 'the piper as one of the middle-ground figures' and added 'the head of the muscular man on the right' of the illustration ('Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné,' p. 150).
