Wycliffe Reading his Translation of the Bible - Study for Constance1846 – 1848 Accession number: 1906P692 Pencil on cream paper. Width: 143 mm Height: 135 mm InformationThis is one of several studies for the figure of Constance, Princess of Castile León, and John of Gaunt's second wife (1354-1394). The child sitting on her knee is Katherine, their only daughter, who later married Henry III, King of Castile and León. The sitters are most likely to be 'Mrs Yates & child' who Brown records in his diary, came to model for him on 20 December 1847. On 28 January 1848 her husband posed for the head of Chaucer and on 29 January Brown 'made a drawing of her hand & her child' (Virginia Surtees, ed., 'The Diary of Ford Madox Brown,' pp. 21 and 27).LM
