Female - Drapery Study of a seated Woman1865 Accession number: 1904P99 Pencil over red-brown chalk on cream-toned paper. Width: 182 mm Height: 226 mm InformationThis is a preliminary drapery study for the figure on the title page which Burne-Jones designed for Ruskin's book, 'Sesame & Lilies', published in June 1865. The design was never actually used, however it did appear later as the frontispiece of Volume XVIII of the Library Edition of Ruskin's works. Although the lower half of the drapery is the same as that in the incomplete design, the upper half of the figure was later altered, and the figure holds the orb in her left hand, balancing it on her left knee, while her right arm grasps a sword, raising it above her head. The design is currently in the Ruskin Gallery, Bembridge School.
