Information

This is a drapery study for the watercolour 'Danae', which was destroyed by fire at a framemakers shortly after completion. The watercolour is now only known by this drawing.Burne-Jones wrote in his list works, now in the Fitzwilliam Museum, that '[Charles Augustus] Howell said it was burnt. Therefore it was not - or if it was destroyed, then it was by drowning.' Howell was the sometime friend, dealer and agent for many painters in the Rossetti circle, although he was unscrupulous and under the guise of friendship often misled or even cheated others. Burne-Jones often referred to him as 'that scoundrel Howell', 'that ill-omened and wicked Howell', or 'that demon Howell'.
