A complex photomechanical process where the essential aim is to transfer an image photographically onto an etching plate for printing. The process gained wide commercial usage in the reproduction of paintings, for example the work of Edward Burne-Jones, in the nineteenth century.

Proof
Printing term. An impression taken before work on a printing plate or block is complete, to check the progress of the image, sometimes called a ‘trial proof’. An Artist's Proof or Printer's Proof are impressions of the finished print that have been identified respectively for the artist and the printer.
